What do you do for work currently? I'm a structural engineering associate for CA Group, Inc. My work focuses on the design of transportation infrastructure, such as bridges and drainage structures. Where are you originally from? My hometown is Henderson, Nevada. I graduated with my undergrad in civil engineering at UNLV in Spring 2023. After working in the industry for one year, I moved up to Reno in August 2024 to pursue my master's in structural engineering at UNR. I will be graduating this May 2026. Why did you want to become a civil engineer? My dad worked as a union carpenter in Las Vegas. He helped build most of the casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and UNLV's first Engineering Building (Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex—TBE). Unfortunately, he threw his back out and had to get major back surgery. He told me to use my brain instead of my body to make a career, so I pursued civil engineering. I wanted to use my love for math, science, and construction to help design cool projects that will help benefit the local community. How did you find out about ASCE? I joined ASCE during my undergrad at UNLV. I was the project manager for UNLV's concrete canoe team the last two years before I graduated. Afterwards, I was a member of the Las Vegas YMF chapter before moving to Reno. I am now an active member of UNR's concrete canoe and steel bridge team and a board member of the Truckee Meadows YMF. |
