Walk with us from the hotel to the UNR campus for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at seismic engineering and historic building retrofits. You’ll get to explore the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory’s shake tables, which are used to simulate real earthquakes and test structural resilience. Then we’ll head beneath the DeLaMare/Mackay Mines / Mackay Mines Building to see one of the world’s early seismic base-isolation systems in action. Constructed in 1908 and retrofitted in the 1990s, the building was one of the first historic structures to adopt this technology. We’ll split into two groups (due to space constraints) so half can visit the isolators while the other half tours the DeLaMare Makerspace, home to 3D printers, laser cutters, PCB milling, and more. This is a rare opportunity to see how theory meets practice from shaking platforms to the very foundations isolating a century-old building.
